ANSI Lumens vs Lumens: How to Spot Fake Projector Brightness (2026)
Quick answer
ANSI lumens and ISO lumens are measured by a standard test on the image the projector actually puts on the screen, and they are roughly comparable. A bare "lumens", "LED lumens" or "light source lumens" has no standard test. On cheap listings it can be dozens of times the real figure: one sub-$200 projector advertised at over 8,000 lumens measured about 100 ANSI. Compare projectors only on ANSI or ISO ratings.
ANSI vs ISO vs LED vs CVIA Lumens
| Rating | How it's measured | Can you compare it? |
|---|---|---|
| ANSI lumens | ANSI IT7.228: full-white image, light measured at 9 points across the screen, averaged. | Yes. The long-time industry standard. |
| ISO lumens (ISO 21118) | International standard, also a 9-point average on a full-white image. Gradually replacing ANSI. | Yes, roughly equal to ANSI. There is no official conversion, but the figures are in the same ballpark. |
| Epson "color & white brightness" | White brightness per ISO 21118, plus a separate color brightness rating (IDMS 15.4). | Yes. The white figure is an ISO number. |
| CVIA lumens | China Video Industry Association method: 9-point average with added color-temperature conditions. | Not directly. ProjectorCentral says it is not equivalent to ANSI or ISO. |
| "LED lumens", "light source lumens", plain "lumens" on no-name listings | No standard. Often the light inside the projector before the lens, or simply a marketing number. | No. There is no fixed ratio to ANSI, so it can't be converted. |
A note on conversion rules. You will see rules like "divide LED lumens by 2.4" online. That ratio happens to match one honest example (ASUS's ZenBeam L2, below), but the LED-lumen figure has no test behind it, so the gap varies by model. For no-name listings it can be dozens of times. If a brand won't publish an ANSI or ISO number, assume the projector is dim.
A plain "lumens" from Epson, BenQ, Optoma, ViewSonic or Sony is a different case: those brands rate to ANSI or ISO on their spec sheets even when the Amazon title shortens it.
Real Examples: Listed Lumens vs Standard Ratings
Even name brands have overstated brightness. In 2023, after complaints from Epson, XGIMI moved its line to ISO ratings and Wemax cut its claim. ProjectorCentral's measurements matched the revised numbers.
| Projector | Claimed / listed | Standard rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ZenBeam L2In our catalog | 960 "LED lumens" (Amazon title) | 400 ANSI lumens (ASUS spec) | The LED-lumen figure is 2.4× the ANSI rating. That ratio applies to this model only and does not convert other projectors. |
| ASUS ZenBeam Latte L1In our catalog | 300 "lumens" (Amazon title) | No ANSI or ISO figure published | ASUS rates it in LED lumens. Treat it as a small dark-room projector. |
| XGIMI Halo | 800 ANSI lumens (original rating) | 600 ISO lumens (revised 2023) | ProjectorCentral measured 642 ANSI lumens on its review sample. |
| XGIMI Halo+ (original) | 900 ANSI lumens (original rating) | 700 ISO lumens (revised 2023) | ProjectorCentral measured 753 lumens. |
| XGIMI Horizon Pro 4K | 2,200 ANSI lumens (original rating) | 1,500 ISO lumens (revised 2023) | ProjectorCentral measured 1,521 ANSI lumens at peak. |
| Wemax Nova UST | 2,100 ANSI lumens (original rating) | 1,300 ANSI lumens (revised 2023) | The rating was revised after an Epson complaint. |
| No-name "8,000+ lumen" projector under $200 | 8,000+ "lumens" | About 100 ANSI lumens measured | Measured by an Australian projector retailer (Just Projectors). |

Projector Lumens Chart: How Many You Need
Rated ANSI/ISO lumens to look for, by screen size and room light, for a 16:9 image on a standard matte white screen. Every figure assumes an honest ANSI or ISO rating. A "9,500 lumen" listing does not qualify for any column.
| Screen | Dark room | Dim (one lamp, curtains) | Lights on / daytime curtains |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80" | 450+ | 850+ | 1,400+ |
| 100" | 700+ | 1,350+ | 2,250+ |
| 120" | 1,050+ | 1,900+ | 3,200+ |
| 150" | 1,600+ | 3,000+ | 5,000+ |
How we calculated it: lumens = target screen brightness (foot-lamberts) × screen area (sq ft) ÷ screen gain, with 16 fL for a dark room (the SMPTE cinema reference) and 30 / 50 fL as common rules of thumb for rooms with some or moderate light, plus 50% headroom for accurate picture modes, eco mode and aging. In real daylight a regular projector still looks washed out. An ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen helps more than extra lumens there.
Bedroom or small room
Usually dark and 80-100", so about 450-700 ANSI/ISO is enough. See the best projectors for bedrooms and for small rooms.

Portable / battery projectors
Most honest portables are rated 200-700 ANSI/ISO, so they are dark-room projectors. Compare them in portable projectors.
How to Spot Fake Projector Specs on Amazon
- Look for the standard. "ANSI" or "ISO" next to the number is the minimum. "LED lumens", "light source lumens", "lux" or a bare five-digit number usually means no standard rating exists.
- Check the number against the price. Honest 3,000+ lumen projectors come from Epson, BenQ, Optoma, ViewSonic and similar brands; the cheapest in stock in our catalog is $599 right now. A palm-sized projector under $150 claiming 9,500-20,000 lumens is off by a factor of 10 or more.
- Find the manufacturer's own spec page. If the brand has no website with a spec sheet, the Amazon title is the only source of the number, and no one stands behind it.
- Read the resolution line too. Listings that inflate lumens often say "4K supported" or "1080p supported". That means the projector accepts the signal, not that it displays it. Look for "native 1080p", or for 4K UHD, which on affordable projectors means pixel shift.
- Use the reviews for brightness, not the stars. Search the reviews for "dim" or "daytime". Owners of fake-lumen projectors almost always say they only work in a pitch-dark room.
- Check independent measurements. ProjectorCentral measures lumens in its reviews. Even honest ratings often land below spec: it found portables averaged 20-25% under their ANSI rating.

Projector Lumens FAQ
What is the difference between ANSI lumens and lumens?
ANSI lumens follow a standard test (ANSI IT7.228): the projector shows a full-white image, brightness is measured at 9 points across the screen and averaged. Plain "lumens" on a listing has no defined method. From a major brand it is usually an ANSI or ISO figure under a shorter name. From a no-name brand it often means "light source" or "LED" lumens measured before the lens, which can be many times higher than the brightness that reaches your screen.
Are ISO lumens the same as ANSI lumens?
Close, but not identical. ISO 21118 also averages 9 measurement points on a full-white image, and ProjectorCentral calls it the standard that is gradually replacing ANSI. There is no official conversion between them. For the same projector the two figures are in the same ballpark, so treat a 1,000 ISO and a 1,000 ANSI lumen projector as roughly equally bright.
Are 9,500 lumen projectors real?
No. A small projector that sells for under $200 cannot produce 9,500 ANSI lumens. When an Australian retailer tested one sub-$200 projector advertised at over 8,000 lumens, it measured about 100 ANSI lumens. Real 3,000+ ANSI/ISO lumen projectors come from brands like Epson, BenQ, Optoma and ViewSonic and cost much more; the cheapest one in stock in our catalog is $599 today.
How do I convert LED lumens to ANSI lumens?
You can't do it reliably. "LED lumens" and "light source lumens" have no standard test, so the gap to ANSI varies by brand and model. One honest example: ASUS rates the ZenBeam L2 at 960 LED lumens and 400 ANSI lumens, a factor of 2.4. That ratio says nothing about other projectors. Ignore any number without "ANSI" or "ISO" next to it and look for a brand that publishes one.
What are CVIA lumens?
CVIA lumens are a rating promoted by the China Video Industry Association and used by some Chinese brands. Like ANSI and ISO they average 9 points, but they add color-temperature and other conditions. ProjectorCentral says CVIA figures are not equivalent to ANSI or ISO, so don't compare them directly.
How many lumens do I need for a projector?
For an 80-100" image in a dark room, about 450-700 ANSI/ISO lumens is enough. With a lamp on or light leaking past curtains, aim for 1,300-2,000. For a living room with lights on, or screens of 120" and bigger, plan on 2,000-3,500. Outdoors after dark, see our outdoor lumens guide.
Why does my projector look dimmer than its lumen rating?
The rating is taken in the brightest picture mode, which usually has a green or blue tint. Accurate modes like Cinema or Filmmaker, eco mode and an aging lamp all cut output, sometimes by half. Measured output also often falls short of the spec: ProjectorCentral found portable projectors averaged 20-25% below their ANSI ratings. That is why our chart adds 50% headroom.
